European-based Air Transport Rating Agency (ATRA) released its list of the world's 10 safest airlines yesterday. While European and American airlines seldom make it to the top rankings when it comes to top notch customer service, carriers from these regions seem to be much safer as per the ATRA.

As many as six North American airlines made it top the top 10. These airlines are American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. European carriers that made it to the list are Air France - KLM, British Airways and Lufthansa.

No airlines from Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East or Asia are in the top ten lists, with the sole exception of Japan Airlines.

The ATRA is a rating agency based in Geneva, Switzerland that deals with aviation risk assessment and advanced data analyses in the air travel sector.

To conduct first study of its kind, the Air Transport Rating Agency is reported to have examined publicly available information on 15 criteria. This includes total number of travellers and cabin crew workforce; the average age of the carrier's aircraft fleet, frequency of accidents in past ten years, dedicated flight academy pilot-training facilities and dedicated full flight simulators.

Air Transport Rating Agency elucidated that to understand airline safety, one is required to not only look at accident figures, but also give attention to "technical, human, organisational and external" elements.

ATRA believed that the European Union's list was a good beginning as far as airline safety rating is concerned but the agency said that the listing led to a belief that all airlines which do not feature on the 'blacklist' are providing the same level of safety, which the agency believes is surely not the case.

Dubai Airport sees record numbers of passengers

Dubai Airport has revealed that it saw a record number of people pass through the terminal in July.

People taking cheap flights to Dubai could find that there are a large number of other travellers in the terminal after it was reported the airport had seen a big boost in numbers last month.

According to figures released by Dubai International Airport, a record 4.7 million passengers passed through the terminal during July 2011.

This number was an increase of 400,000 people on the previous month and means that 29.2 million people used the airport during the first seven months of this year.

It was a nine per cent increase on the number of travellers recorded for the same period of 2010.

"This latest milestone further illustrates Dubai International Airport's emergence as a preeminent global hub," said Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports.

Mumbai airport 'subject to new security measures'

People travelling from Mumbai have been advised that there have been new security measures put in place.

Travellers who take flights to Mumbai have been advised that when they come to depart the country there are a series of new security measures in place.

In the past, people did not experience any form of search until they reached the security hold area, the Times of India reported.

However, checks on passengers and their baggage will take place earlier, with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security now requiring an X-ray system to be used for baggage and hand-held metal detectors which will be used by airport employees.

"Till now, there was no frisking or examining of luggage till one procured a boarding pass and moved to the security area. Now, most pieces of luggage will be screened at the entrance as well," an official at the airport told the newspaper.

Auckland Airport 'sees strong increase in profits'

Auckland Airport has seen a boost to its business in recent months.

If an airline is not able to offer another flight to the passenger within two hours for domestic travel and four hours for international flights, the passenger will now be entitled to cash compensation of four times the value of ticket up to $1,300. The current decree requires the airline to pay double the ticket value up to $800 for long delays.

However, the new rule does not benefit those travellers whose baggage is delayed. It is reported that only 1% of the checked baggage is declared ‘lost’ by the airline.

Involuntary Bumping

Travellers who have valid air tickets and are involuntarily denied boarding will be entitled to much more compensation from the airlines under new regulations. Airlines will now be required to pay a compensation of four times the value of ticket up to $1,300 if they are not able to provide alternative flight to the passenger within two hours for domestic travel and four hours for international flights.

This new rule is sure to discourage airlines from overbooking flights. Not many carriers will have a heart to bump passengers if the bumping compensation is so high. This is the second significant rise in the compensation in recent years.

DOT’s Proposed Regulations

Gulf Air is set to increase the number of flights it offers to passengers travelling to the Indian sub-continent as it ushers in its new winter schedule - including a range of cheap flights to Chennai.

The firm is also vying to boost services to Kathmandu and Dhaka.

Gulf Air is shaking up its existing schedule as well, changing the flight times of its daily chartered services to Delhi - to ensure connecting flights line up.

Mr Karim Makhlouf, Gulf Air's chief commercial officer, said: "With the addition of Nairobi, Copenhagen, Geneva and Milan to our network recently, the travel patterns of our customers also indicated that they are looking for better connectivity to these destinations."

He added that the firm's aim was simple, to offer its customers the best possible network of destinations across all market segments.

Gulf Air has promised to expand its range of services to meet increasing demand for cheap flights to Dubai.

The airline announced this week that it has chartered 14 additional flights each week to the nation state.

Gulf Air is also planning to up the number of flights to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates by a total of 28.

The move is part of the carrier's new winter schedule and the firm's chief commercial officer Karim Makhlouf told Alrroya.com that the driving force behind the change was a "tremendous increase in traffic [to] our popular destinations".

Abu Dhabi will also benefit from seven extra flights per week, meaning Gulf Air is putting on a total of 98 extra chartered flights.

British Airways and Qantas in Strategic Alliance

Qantas and British Airways have decided to restructure their long-running Joint Services Agreement (JSA), which will allow both airlines to strengthen their Singapore hub and to provide better connections, products and services to travellers who book flights between London Heathrow and Australia.

Australia’s Qantas will continue its Airbus A380 services from Melbourne and Sydney to London via Singapore, while UK’s flag carrier, British Airways will upgrade its London-Singapore-Sydney operations from a Boeing 777 to Boeing 747. Jetstar, Japan Airlines Form a Low-Cost Carrier

Australia’s Qantas Group and Japan Airlines (JAL) announced today the launch of a low-cost Japanese carrier, Jetstar Japan. Together with Mitsubishi Corporation, the two oneworld partners hope to make this new airline operational by the end of the next year. Each three of them will hold 1/3 share in the new airline.

Jetstar Japan will be a budget carrier that will cater to those airline passengers who look for cheap flight tickets. The airline is expected to offer flights from the Tokyo, Narita Airport and Osaka, Kansai International. Jetstar Japan is also expected to provide short haul international flights eventually. Its international operations will most likely cover key Asian cities.

Jetstar Japan will initially launch with a fleet of three Airbus A320s, with each of them configured for 180 passengers in a single class. Within first few years, the airline hopes to grow to 24 aircrafts.

Qantas Group’s Jetstar first entered Japan in 2007 and since then has become the preferred carrier of those who opt for cheap tickets on flights. President of Japan Airlines, Mr. Masaru Onishi was also buoyed by the development and expressed hopes that the new airline will assist JAL to cater to wider market in Japan.

“We are confident that Jetstar Japan will broaden the spectrum of travellers as it creates new demand in this market,” observed Mr. Onishi.

“It will encourage even more movement of people within the country and also increase the number of visitors from Asia to Japan. We anticipate this to stimulate consumer spending and play a role in revitalizing the Japanese economy,” he added.

Cadel Evans has made it back to Australia following his Tour de France victory.

Extras train services are to be put on in Delhi in order to cope with the increased numbers attending a festival.

People getting flights to Delhi in time to celebrate the Raksha Bandhan festivities may be pleased to hear that there will be an increase in the amount of trains that are running.

In anticipation of a large number of people descending on the city, the NCR rail service has announced that it will run an additional 200 services on Saturday August 13th 2011.

Each year, a large increase in the number of people using the services is seen as indiviuals travel to the city to visit their relatives, with many preferring to use the metro to beat the traffic.

"Trains will be run at peak-hour frequency from 08:00 to 20:30 local time on Saturday and over 15 trains which are normally withdrawn from lines during off peak hours will be kept in service," said DMRC chief public relations officer Anuj Dayal.

Bob Bradley 'could take on Egypt football team'

A new boss could soon be in charge of the Egyptian national football team.

People hoping to take in a football game after getting cheap flights to Egypt could be interested to hear the national team may soon have a new manager.

There are reports that former USA coach Bob Bradley is in talks with the team's representatives to take over the role, BBC Sport has reported.

Ron Waxman, Bradley's agent, has confirmed that there have been discussions but did not give away any extra information.

It is thought that Bradley is one of three potential managers for the side, who recently saw Hassan Shehata leave, with the country running the risk of not qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations contest.

If they fail to do so, it will be the first time that Egypt has not been represented in the contest in 33 years.

A new production of The Merry Widow is now performing at the Sydney Opera House.

Travellers taking flights to Sydney this month will be able to see a new production of The Merry Widow, which is opening in the city.

The Franz Lehar production tells the story of the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari, who the financiers and diplomats of Pontevedro are desperate to keep in the country in order to stop it from going bankrupt.

As well as convincing her to stay, there is the matter of setting her up with Baron Zeta, although to everyone but Hanna and the lofty idealist Danilo, it is obvious where her real affections lie.

The production is set to run at the Opera House until November 4th 2011, with Amelia Farrugia and David Hobson taking on the show's lead roles.

Cathy Ranson, editor-in-chief of Netmums, suggested that there is no need for parents to splash out on expensive items to avoid boredom in the departure longue, as all they need is to get their children a notepad and some pens.

She explained that with a little bit of imagination, it is possible to keep a child entertained for a long period of time with something so simple.

"Little ones like to draw around their hand or colour in things you've drawn for them. Older children can play noughts and crosses, hang man, draw cartoons or draw you a picture," Ms Ranson advised.

Thailand 'holds Indigenous People's Day events

Thailand has played host to a series of events to celebrate the indigenous peoples of the world.

Travellers on flights to Thailand could have the chance to take part in some of the events which are being held in the country to mark the International Day for World's Indigenous People.

Taking place until August 9th 2011, the three-day event is being staged in Chiangmai and will see representatives from 36 different ethnic groups taking part, the Shan Herald reported.

A festival entitled the Asserting Indigenous Peoples' Lifestyle and Rights event will be held at Suan Chalerm Phrakiat King Rama IX of the Chiangmai Provincial Administrative Organization in the city.

Jazz and African Music Nights taking place in August

A series of top music nights are taking place at Pretoria's South African State Theatre this month.

Designed to make the process of travelling between the countries easier, the moves - implemented by Immigration New Zealand - include a relaxation of the rules regarding what documents are needed to support a visa application and efforts to encourage multiple-journey permits into New Zealand.

In addition, Immigration New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand have launched up a shared office in Shanghai, a facility that was opened by chief executive of the latter organisation Kevin Bowler.

He notes that China is one of his country's "fastest growing visitor markets", with the number of arrivals from the Asian nation rising from 20,000 to 130,000 between 1999 and June 2011.

"The additional effort by Immigration New Zealand in China will support this increasing demand and is likely to encourage greater numbers of single-destination travellers who will want to see more and do more in New Zealand," he states.

In order to obtain a visa to enter New Zealand, Chinese travellers - as well as those from certain other countries - need to have a valid passport, proof that they have plans to leave the country and be able to show they have enough money to support themselves during their stay.

Legendary football figure Diego Maradona has arrived in Dubai to begin his tenure with Al Wasl.

Bangkok set for 77-storey skyscraper

The MahaNakon looks set to become the tallest skyscraper in Bangkok.

A skyscraper 77 stories high could soon be on the must-see lists of people taking cheap flights to Bangkok.

The MahaNakon - or Great Metropolis - will become the city's tallest building, taking over from the Baiyoke Tower.

It is expected to be completed by 2014 and reach 314 metres into the sky, housing a shopping centre, a Ritz-Carlton hotel and residential units.

Speaking to AFP about the structure's peculiar pixelated spiral design, Sorapoj Techakraisri said: "I just wanted something unique, something interesting."

Mr Techakraisri, head of Pace Development, pointed out that the construction of ever-taller buildings seems to follow the fortunes of the economy, so when it grows, the skyline does too.

The 19 billion baht skyscraper was designed by German architect Ole Scheeren and construction work began in June 2011.
