The Merry Widow performing at the Sydney Opera House

A new production of The Merry Widow is now performing at the Sydney Opera House.

Travellers taking flights to Sydney this month will be able to see a new production of The Merry Widow, which is opening in the city.

The Franz Lehar production tells the story of the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari, who the financiers and diplomats of Pontevedro are desperate to keep in the country in order to stop it from going bankrupt.

As well as convincing her to stay, there is the matter of setting her up with Baron Zeta, although to everyone but Hanna and the lofty idealist Danilo, it is obvious where her real affections lie.

The production is set to run at the Opera House until November 4th 2011, with Amelia Farrugia and David Hobson taking on the show's lead roles.

Songs for Nobodies to be performed in Sydney

Sydney Opera House will welcome the one-woman show Songs for Nobodies in August.

Theatre-goers keen to check out a top-notch production could go and see Songs for Nobodies after they get to Australia on cheap flights to Sydney.

It will be staged at Sydney Opera House's Playhouse venue from August 4th to 19th, with shows taking place every evening except Monday and matinees available at the weekend.

Songs for Nobodies tells the story of five women's encounters with iconic singers and how they changed their lives.

A representative from the venue remarked: "The wonderful new play by Australia’s renowned playwright Joanna Murray–Smith, was written especially to showcase the extraordinary talents of Australian singer and actress, Bernadette Robinson."

Sydney Opera House to host The Planets - A Journey in HD

A stunning new show will combine Holst's The Planets with real images of outer space.


The Planets - A Journey in HD is a new show available to people who have taken cheap flights to Sydney.

It combines the dramatic orchestral force of Gustav Holst's acclaimed composition with high definition images of space captured by NASA probes and the Hubble telescope.

This unique performance at the Sydney Opera House will see Emmanuel Pahud, principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic, take a central role in the first half of the show.

"Holst's Planets wasn't written for the movies, but it could have been - it has the monumental character and emotional force of a great film score," the organisers pointed out.

As well as Pahud, the performance will feature the ladies of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and conductor Ludovic Morlot.

It will be staged at 20:00 local time on July 8th and 9th and 19:00 on July 11th.
