South Africa sees most successful year to date for tourists

South Africa last year saw its most successful season ever for tourists visiting the country.

South Africa has announced a strong increase in the number of people travelling to the country over the past year.

Tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk announced the country saw its best tourist season on record last year as it witnessed over eight million foreign tourists travel to the country.

This figure is 3.3 per cent more than the numbers that headed to the country for the 2010 World Cup.

As a result of hosting the football contest, the minister said the nation received international media exposure that helped the country to establish strong infrastructure.

Mr van Schalkwyk added that the tourism sector refused to become complacent as a result of these changes.

"Instead, we used it as a catalyst to work even harder to sustain that tourism growth, to defend our core tourist markets and to tap into the potential of new tourism markets," he added.
