Nelson Mandela 'attracts people to Johannesburg'

Following in the footsteps taken by Nelson Mandela has helped Johannesburg to become a favourite tourism destination.

Many of the people taking cheap flight to Johannesburg who wish to learn more about Nelson Mandela may not be alone, as tours and museums based on his life and work are becoming ever more popular.

Following in the footsteps of the anti-apartheid activist and former president of South Africa is a big attraction for many of the people who travel to the city, according to Laura Vercueil, spokeswoman for the Johannesburg tourism office.

She told the AFP that anything which is linked to his life and work is of huge importance to many who come to the city.

"The most wanted attractions are linked to Nelson Mandela. The most popular request is to go to Soweto, in order to have a township experience and see Mandela's house," Ms Vercueil.

The building has been a museum to Mandela since 1997 and is often packed with visitors.
