Volunteering 'can have big benefits to communities'

People who head away to volunteer while on holiday have been reminded that what they are doing is very fulfilling.

Travellers who are planning to take cheap flights to India in order to take a part in a volunteering programme have been reminded that what they are doing can have great advantages to the community.

Commenting on some of the myths surrounding volunteering, i-to-i has compiled a list of reasons why helping in a foreign country can have big benefits for the individual and those they travel to work with.

It noted the ethical benefits of helping in a poorer nation rather than just going to see it as a tourist, as well as being a good way to get to learn more about local customs.

For those who are planning to go away to teach English and are concerned about the impact they can have when they do not speak the language themselves, it added that often children will respond better when they are totally immersed in a foreign language.
