Cairns in the running for Brisbane Roar v Wellington Phoenix match

The city could host the A-League fixture on December 14th.

Sports fans may be persuaded to book cheap flights to Cairns if the Tropical North Queensland city's bid to host an A-League football match proves successful.

Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix are set to face off at a regional venue on December 14th and Cairns council chiefs have thrown their support behind the city's application to stage the game.

To support the bid from Far North Queensland Soccer Zone, Cairns Regional Council has committed assistance to the value of AU$20,000 (£13,000).

Cairns mayor Val Schier said the game is an "excellent opportunity" to put the city on the map as a major sporting hub in the tropical north.

"As well as providing quality sporting entertainment for our residents and encouraging more children to take up sport, the match has the potential to market Cairns to a broad television audience," she added.
