Champakulam Moolam Boat Race

Travellers can still catch the Champakulam Moolam Boat Race.

Travellers who have caught cheap flights to India still have the opportunity to catch one of the oldest snake boat races.

The Champakulam Moolam Boat Race in Kerala is as popular as ever and takes place on the banks of the Pampa at Champakulam, Alappuzha.

Here you can view speedy boats tearing down the river while thousands of people on the banks cheer and look on as the energetic rowers pass by.

The event is much more than just a boat race and there are plenty of celebrations with a wonderful procession preceding the event and artists entertaining the huge crowds of people who flock to see the continuation of this historic event.

The snake boat race – it gets its name from the snake-like stern – has existed for nearly 500 years and is loosely connected with Onam, the harvest festival that follows on.
