Cairns: where the forest meets the sea

Cairns in north-east Australia has the enviable position of being sandwiched between the beautiful blue waters of the Coral Sea to the east and the lush tropical paradise of the rainforest to the west.

Just north of Cairns lies the forest town of Kuranda, which acts as the hub for tourist activities in the area.

Highlights of the Kuranda region include the roaring Barron Falls, which is a raging torrent during the wet season but can run completely dry during less wet months, the Kuranda scenic railway and the Skyrail cable car, which provides an incredible aerial view of the densely packed trees below.
