The popularity of Delhi airport with people travelling to the country for business and holidays has helped the terminal to give a boost to the nation's economy.
New statistics from the Indian government have shown the airport alone helped to contribute 0.45 per cent to the country's gross domestic product in the financial year 2009-2010.
The National Council of Applied Economic Research found that the contribution made by the international airport is only likely to increase further between now and 2020.
As well as helping to contribute financially, the airport has also helped to generate 1,578,000 jobs, which contributes to a total of 0.34 per cent of national employment and 25.9 per cent of jobs in Delhi.
Dr Syed Nasim Ahmed Zaidi, secretary for civil aviation, said: "Delhi Airport is ranked first in the country in terms of passenger arrivals and second in terms of freight. It is also ranked as the second best airport worldwide in the 25 to 40 million passengers category."
